The Internet pages of the German government and Chancellor Angela Merkel were attacked by hackers on Wednesday, said a government spokesman.

Websites including bundeskanzlerin.de and bundesregierung.de were temporarily paralyzed by the hacker attack, confirmed German government spokesman Steffen Seibert, calling it "a quite severe attack".

The spokesman did not give further details, but added the government has made counter-measures and informed the German Federal Office for Information Security to conduct analysis of the attack.

A Ukrainian hacker group named CyberBerkut has reportedly confessed to the attack.
